Fancy | Reba McEntire

We took a quick road trip to the coast this past weekend to escape the wind and rain of Port Townsend. As expected, our drive led to no change in climate. If anything, perhaps there was even a bit more rain. Despite the weather, we decided to book a room at the Mariners Cove Inn in the small fishing town of Westport, WA. After a hot shower (a bona fide treat for live aboards!) we hit the town in search of dinner and the local evening entertainment. Being that we waited until the wee hours of 8:00 to dine, the limited number of restaurant establishments were already closed. As luck would have it though, we spotted the twinkling neon lights of Budweiser and Coors signs at the other end of the block. As we approached the Pine Tree Tavern, the parking lot indicated this was the place to be.

And, as “luck” would have it, Saturday night at the Pine Tree is karaoke night! I won’t get into the singing aptitude of the Westport locals, but I will say they have great energy. They cheered for each and every crooner on the mic; they sang along even when the song selection was a mistake; and in general, they enjoyed every minute of their town’s evening entertainment. After an unforgettable version of Led Zepplin’s All of My Love, a new song queued up and the energy at the Pine Tree exploded. Every patron was on their feet singing each line like they had written the lyrics from the bottom of their hearts. I leaned over to my new friend who invited us to join them at their table to ask what song it was. SHE WAS APPALLED.

Turns out the song was Fancy by Reba McEntire and I, too, am now in love with it. Fancy was released in 1990 on Reba’s Rumor Has It album. The song was originally written by Bobbie Gentry in 1969, but didn’t make the charts until Reba made it one of her top songs of all times. She also made a mini-movie out of it in the music video. And I now present it to you. ENJOY the VEIW!
